Kanditheemu is surrounded by coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass meadows, lagoons, beaches and interconnected coastal ecosystems.
Understanding how these environments change requires more than one-off surveys or short-term conservation projects. It requires continuous observation, scientific partnerships, local capacity and long-term commitment.
Blue Guild Foundation is establishing the Kanditheemu Marine Research and Blue Carbon Observatory as a 10-year community-led platform for marine science, environmental monitoring and ecosystem stewardship.
Our ambition is simple: build one credible, scientifically useful and community-rooted marine observatory in Kanditheemu — and sustain it long enough to generate meaningful evidence of environmental change.
Why Kanditheemu?
Kanditheemu, located in Shaviyani Atoll in northern Maldives, provides access to an interconnected marine environment including:

Blue Guild Foundation is based on the island, providing the permanent local presence needed to maintain community relationships, support monitoring and provide continuity between visiting scientific missions.

Train residents, youth and local research assistants to participate meaningfully in environmental monitoring.

What We Are Building
The Observatory will progressively connect eight areas of work:
Environmental Baseline & GIS
Build the scientific reference point for Kanditheemu's marine and coastal environment.
Long-Term Marine & Climate Monitoring
Establish repeat monitoring of reefs, mangroves, seagrass, coastlines and environmental conditions.
Marine Research Lab & Field Station
Develop practical local infrastructure for field science, sample processing, GIS and visiting researchers.
Kanditheemu Reef & Biodiversity Programme
Map and monitor reef habitats, coral communities, biodiversity and environmental change.
Mangrove Solidarity
A conservation partnership platform supporting long-term mangrove research, monitoring, stewardship and protection.
Majlis of the Sea
An island-based platform bringing communities, scientists, youth, government, universities and partners together around marine science and stewardship.
Kanditheemu Reef Atlas
A living scientific map documenting reef habitats, biodiversity, environmental condition and change over time.
Blue Carbon Governance Pathway
Connecting mangrove and seagrass evidence with community participation, local decision-making and responsible conservation-finance assessment.
